8vo. 5 x 5.5 inches. Concertina type view-book of glazed lithographs, extending to 39 inches, containing 22 different images, including 2 fine panoramas of the Sea Front and Castle and Dover from Castle Hill. Printed in Germany.
This type of view book originates in Germany and is an example of the curious mixture of photograph and drawing which was prolific from about 1875 to 1895 when photography finally won the day. This example may date from the mid-1880s as it features both the S.S. Calais-Douvres (1878-87) and the S.S. Invicta (1882-98) in service (their overlap period being 1882-87). (Burt, 1934).
