Synopsis

A copy-book of 11 stylised seascapes and landscapes, castles and rustic or classical subjects. although there is neither printing nor notes in the book to suggest the use of these designs, they are strikingly similar in style to the decorations which appear on the mass produced american clocks of this era which were mostly reverse painted on square or oblong glass panels, particularly those of eli terry (1772 - 1853) of connecticut.

Item Description

Bound in original marbled paper wrappers with a thin sheep spine, containing 11 pages, each with an ink and watercolour design, seven of which are 9 x 3.5 inches, two are 8 x 4 inches, one 14 x 10 inches and one 10 x 8 inches.

Notes

Apart from the watermark there are no more clues as to where this was used. One of the drawings is titled 'The Temple of Venus'. In the top right hand corner, each is marked from F7/1 to F7/11.
