An autobiographical study of the life and career of James Inches Hillocks (1826-72), nonconformist minister and urban missionary. The first part of the book, Battles to live and learn, describes his early life in Dundee and Edinburgh; the second part, Battles for Usefulness, his early work as a minister in London and includes descriptions of Derby Day, the Harrow Train Collision of 1870 in which he was injured and a visit to Canada and the USA.; the third part, Roots and Remedies of London Misery investigates working among the London poor, the slums, the drink problem and the role of the church. The introduction is by the Rev. Walter Chalmers Smith, D.D., L.L.D (1824-1908), Minister in the United Free Church of Scotland and poet. The first edition was published in 1884.
