A little foxing of page edges, but otherwise a very good clean copy. Illustrated by folding map and by map and by 19 tables in text. An ethnological and cultural analysis of a wider Middle East stretching across the whole of North Africa to Turkey, Arabia and Turkmenistan. He discuses social organisation, the family and the role of religion and analyses socio-cultural changes, including the impacts of nationalism and westernisation. Raphael Patai was a Hungarian born Jewish scholar, who emigrated to Palestine in 1933 and became a US citizen in 1952, holding professorships at a number of US universities and colleges.
