Classic Victorian improving biography of Mark Knowles (b.1834), who rose from a poor weaver's family near Blackburn to become a barrister and temperance advocate. Little is known of the author, Harriet Carson; in his preface to the third edition of 1885, W. E. Burroughs states that she had become totally blind in her infancy.
