8vo. 7.5 x 5.25 inches. 384 pp.+ 16 pp. publisher's advertisements. Bound in original pictorial green cloth, gilt. Rough cut edges. Extremities worn, spine sunned and scattered foxing; otherwise a very good copy. Manuscript school prize inscription 1918 on first free endpaper. Illustrated by 8 sepia plates, including frontispiece, and by 2 page coloured plan. Decorated by initials. The title by G. A. Henty (1832-1902) relates the siege of Jerusalem in AD 70 by the Roman general Titus during First Jewish-Roman War of 66-73, occasioned by the outbreak of the rebellion in Judea. It was first published in 1888, but to judge from the titles listed in the publisher's catalogue, this later edition appears to be a 1905 printing, although the actual main text may be earlier and closer to the first edition. Illustrated by Solomon Joseph Solomon, R.A. (1860-1927), artist, book illustrator and pioneer of camouflage techniques, including netting, during the First World War.
