FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 5.5 x 7.75 inches. 320 pp. Bound in original half brown cloth over red, with printed paper spine label, in dust wrapper, which has sunned spine with chips at head and tail. Deckled edges. A little wear to extremities with two damp stains on edges of front board; otherwise a very good copy. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. Fourth collection of the author's short stories, some of them having previously appeared in periodicals. Alfred Edgar Coppard (1878-1957), born in Folkestone, overcame the poverty of his upbringing and moved to Oxford as a clerk in 1907. In 1919, he gave up his paid employment to set up as a full time writer, his first short story collection being published by the Golden Cockerel Press in 1921. He became to be regarded as one of the most accomplished and original short story writers of his time.
