Patterned endpapers. Extremities worn, including corners and spine dulled, hinges weak, and edges and some margins browned. Bookseller's label of H. H. G. Grattan, 17, The Borough, London Bridge. 1932 gift inscription on first free endpaper and name stamp on title page. Illustrated by 3 plates, numbered in text and by text figures and vignettes. A basic, and partly anecdotal, account of firefighting in the era of horse-drawn appliances. Chapters also examine the history of firefighting, fire insurance, the work of the London Fire Brigade, equipment and techniques in the US. By Frederic Morell Holmes (b.1851), who published numerous children's titles. Scarce first edition.
