8vo. 7.5 x 5 inches. [vi] + 430 pp. Bound in contemporary half brown leather over marbled boards; spine in compartments with raised bands decorated gilt, with contrasting green title label, gilt. Marbled endpapers. All edges marbled. Minor wear to extremities, top edge sunned and a little foxing of fly leaves and a few margins at rear; otherwise a very good clean copy. Illustrated by 6 engraved plates and half title vignette. First published in 1866, this stereotyped edition of the fifth novel of George Eliot (1819-80) is hard to date precisely. It is set in the imaginary Midland town of Treby at the time of the Great Reform Act of 1832. It contrasts election candidate, local landowner, Harold Transome, an opportunist masquerading as a Radical and Felix Holt, a sincere but opinionated Radical.
