Bound in original brown clothe with blind stamped decoration; Spine later rebacked, preserving original, with new endpapers. Illustrated by engraved text figures. Decorated by opening vignette and initial of preface and by publisher's device on title page. Fifteen essays on various categories of surnames, with additional chapters on rebuses and canting arms and Appendices on the Battle Abbey Roll (with transcripts from the copies of Leland, Holinshed and John Foxe), and on Latinized Surnames. Mark Antony Lower (1813-76) was a schoolteacher, antiquarian and historian of Sussex, author of The Sussex Martyrs (1851) and A Compendious History of Sussex (1870), and joint founder of the Sussex Archaeological Society in 1844.
