FIRST ENGLISH TRANSLATION. 8vo. xviii + 395 pp. Bound in original red cloth with pictorial blocks on front board and spine. Extremities worn, including corners and spine darkened. Front hinge starting to crack and small loss in lower margin of pp. 49-50. Otherwise a very good copy. 1904 inscription on half title. Illustrated by engraved frontispiece, by 18 engraved plates numbered in text and by text figures. Decorated by title page and opening chapter vignettes, A translation by Coulson Bell Pitman of the work by Arnold Boscowitz (b.1826), from the 1885 edition of Les Tremblements de Terre. The well illustrated text examines the phenomenon of earthquakes in general and their links with volcanism. It relates a number of events in the world's earthquake zones, including the Virgin Island of St. Thomas, Caracas, Honduras, San Salvador, Lisbon 1755, Calabria, Ischia, Andalusia, The Valais, Mendoza, Chio, Cumana, the Sunda Strait and New Zealand.
