Notes

The George was one of the historic inns of Maidstone, probably of medieval origin. It was located at 37, later 15, Gabriel's Hill, now a conservation area. The 1878 Post Office directory records William Fry as the publican, but the inn does not appear to be recorded into the twentieth century. This invoice records expenditure on breakfast, dinner, tea and coffee, fire and bed (total 9s). On the verso is a list of six names recording a total expenditure of £13. 14s. and the dates, 4 and 5 January 1832. A good example of early nineteenth century commercial typefaces.
