Minor wear to extremities and very small stain on lower page edge; otherwise a very good copy. Pictorial bookplate. Illustrated by 8 black and white plates and by 6 text figures, including genealogical tables and plans. Decorated by subtitle page vignette. The history of Down House, in the village of Down, Kent, from 1651 and home to Charles Darwin and his family from 1842. By Sir Hedley Atkins(1905-83), President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, 1966-69. Atkins lived in Down House from 1962 as honorary curator of the Charles Darwin Museum. First published 1974.
