8vo. 9 x 6.25 inches. [viii] + 245 pp. Bound in original red cloth with black titles and block of title page design on front board. A little wear to extremities and sunning o spine and board edges; otherwise a very good copy. 1948 gift inscription on first free endpaper. Illustrated by red and black pictorial title page, by 11 chromolithograph plates, including frontispiece and by 19 half page chapter heading wood engraved vignettes. Manchester reprint of the edition first published by Blackie, 1900. Based on the early English translation (published 1612), by Thomas Shelton of the novel by Cervantes (1547-1616), an abridgement made by Judge Edward Abbot Parry (1863-1943) with beautiful artwork by the artist, and illustrator, Walter Crane (1845-1915).
