EARLY ISSUE. 8vo. 8.5 x 5.5 inches. xvi + [i] pp. errata + 624 pp. Bound in contemporary half green morocco over marbled boards; spine in compartments with raised bands, decorated gilt with contrasting maroon morocco title label. gilt. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. A little edge wear to extremities and top edge slightly darkened. Some foxing of fly leaves and engraved title; elsewhere occasional scattered foxing, including spotting of three plate margins; otherwise all plates are clean and a very good copy. Illustrated by 40 engraved plates by Hablot K. Browne ('Phiz'), including frontispiece and engraved title with vignette. The first book issue of Dickens's classic tale of Victorian capitalism and the early railway system. It had previously appeared in nineteen separate monthly parts, comprising twenty numbers. An early printing of Dombey and Son, still including many of the errors later corrected by Dickens, the errata printed here including only six alterations (see Smith, Part I, 8, p. 71-2).
