Small 8vo. 5.25 x 3.5 inches. 272 pp. Text in German Gothic script. Bound in half calf, gilt, over blind stamped floral and leaf patterned boards; spine decorated gilt. Light wear to corners and scattered foxing; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by portrait frontispiece engraving of author. The President's Daughters, a title from the author's Scenes from Everyday Life series of novels, translated into German. Frederika Bremer (1801-65) was a Finnish born Swedish social worker writer, traveller and feminist, who successfully extended women's rights in Sweden. Her realist novels became very popular abroad, becoming more widely known after these German translations appeared, and she was called the Swedish Jane Austen.
