Notes

An examination of some chronic conditions of a miasmic nature ('des miasmes chroniques') followed by a compilation of homeopathic proving reports, testing the results of plant extracts and minerals on the various maladies. At the end is a questionnaire to aid the doctor in his examination of the patient, including his or her mental state, followed by a summary of the homeopathic regime. Dr Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843) was a German physician, born in Meissen and famed as the creator of homeopathy (based on the principle of like cures like). He first came to France in 1835 and spent the rest of his career there. Dr Hahnemann's work was appeared in German in 1828 and the first French edition, translated by Dr. Jourdan, was published by Bailliere in Paris in 1832. This version, with a Lyon imprint of the same year, is unusual in being a rival translation, the reason apparently being because Dr Jourdan was 'completement etranger a l'homeopathie' (according to the editor, Comte S. Des Guidi, in his prefatory note). Dr Sebastien Comte des Guidi (1769-1863), born in Naples, is credited with having introduced homeopathy into France in 1830 and was a leading member of the Lyon school of homeopathy that sponsored this alternative version of the Hahnemann book, which Bigel had translated in 1832 Dr Gerard Joseph Marie Bigel (1764-1832) studied medicine at Strasbourg and subsequently practised homeopathy in St Petersburg and Warsaw. In 1827 he had published a three volume examination of Dr Hahnemann's theories and methods. A fine copy of this scarce Lyon imprint of an early work on homeopathy.
