4to. 11 x 8 inches. xvi + 822 pp. + [2] pp. publisher's advertisements. All text within decorative borders. Bound in original brown cloth, gilt, with blind stamped decorative borders, enclosing on front board circular gilt title block; spine in compartments decorated gilt. Extremities worn, including corners and head and tail of spine, which is sunned and neatly repaired at tail. Front hinge starting to crack and occasional traces of foxing; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated throughout by wood engravings, including frontispiece. Decorated by additional engraved title, by title page, head and tailpiece vignettes, by initials and by colophons The Arabian Nights was first published in the French edition originally by Antoine Galland in twelve volumes, 1704-17, as Mille et Une Nuit. The first English translation of part of it had appeared as early as 1706. Galland (1646-1715) was a French orientalist and antiquary to Louis XIV. He derived the Sindbad the Sailor tales from sources in Constantinople and the rest from a Syrian fourteenth century manuscript, although the origins of the Ali Baba and Aladdin stories is unknown as they don't appear in Arabic manuscripts. This copiously illustrated Ward Lock edition is undated but may well be the first of 1865, as the publishing house was titled Ward, Lock, and Tyler only from 1865-73. The text was revised and amended by Henry William Dulcken (1832-94), translator and children's writer. The numerous wood engravings were the product of the Dalziel Brothers wood engraving workshop, run principally by George Dalziel (1815-1902), who founded the business in 1839 and his brother Edward (1817-1905). It was responsible for illustrating numerous Victorian publications and working with the major artists of the day, in the case of this work including Tenniel and Millais.
