Bound in textured cloth, gilt, with black title labels, in pictorial dust wrapper, which has small chips at head of spine. A little spotting of edges and flyleaves, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by drawings with text opposite. Mr. Werner Laurie / Is not at all sorry / He undertook the publication / Of this instructive compilation. A Clerihew consists of two rhymed couplets and usually deals with an episode, true or invented, in the career of a well-known person. It is named after the author, its inventor, the novelist and humorist, Edmund Clerihew Bentley (1875-1956), well known for writing ' the perfect detective story,' Trent's Last Case, regarded as a classic of its genre. The illustrators include G. K. Chesterton (1874-1936) and Nicolas Bentley (1907-78), the author's son. First edition in unclipped dust wrapper.
