The engraving is a half portrait of bonnet in an oval. each link of the chain is engraved with a different species. the engraving is based on bonnet's book,' contemplation of nature' (1764). bonnet was a french naturalist who lived in switzerland. he was a leader in experimental design and is considered a founder of modern biology. he made important scientific discoveries, including parthenogenesis in aphids. he was a defender of the great chain of being, the idea that all organisms could be arranged in a linear sequence.
