8vo. 7.5 x 5.5 inches. 386 pp. + 32 pp. publisher's list. Bound in original russet cloth with bevelled edges, titles in gilt and black and decorated pictorial title blocks on front board and spine. All edges gilt. A little wear to extremities, including corners and head and tail of spine. Occasional scattered foxing throughout, but otherwise a very good copy with an attractive binding. 1902 Sunday School prize label. Illustrated by 12 engraved plates by H. M. Paget, including frontispiece. Decorated by headpiece, by initials and by publisher's device on title page. The adventures of a party travelling via the Mississippi and the western plains to the gold fields of California, by G. A. Henty (1832-1902). This may be a very early reprint, identical to the first edition of 1888 (dated 1889 on title page). Blackie became a limited company in 1890. The publisher's catalogue is later, including a title from 1898, and might have been bound into the remaining stock of the early edition. Twelve plates by Henry Marriott Paget (1857-1936), artist and newspaper and book illustrator, whose work also included titles by R. L. Stevenson and Conan Doyle.
