Notes
The title poem is in the format of a lyrical account of a morning walk in the Spring of 1804 written in five cantos and includes numerous digressions on such themes as Britain's commerce. It is followed by Lumena, Miscellaneous Poems, Lines inspired by The Bench at Dartmouth Point, Blackheath 1807 and a translation of the First Book of the Argonautica of Gaius Valerius Flaccus (d. AD 90), a Roman poet of the Silver Age. It was derivative of the famous Greek version of Apollonius of Rhodes and remains incomplete. The volume is dedicated to Caroline, Princess of Wales, a long term, and somewhat scandalous resident of Blackheath and the impressive list of one hundred and seven subscribers, not all of whom were Blackheath inhabitants, includes His Excellency Sidky Efendi, Ambassador from the Porte. Thomas Noble was a local poet and historian of the Blackheath area, who also taught art at Maize Hill. The plates, including a very sylvan looking Lewisham, are by the author's two artistic brothers, Samuel (1779-1853) and William (1780-1831) Noble.
