Illustrated by 3 maps, one double page and by numerous text figures. Pictorial endpapers. Decorated by vignettes, including title page. Account of early English exploration and attempted settlement of North America, from 1536 onwards, including Raleigh's lost Roanoke colony, 1584-90. It examines the involvement of Drake, Grenville and Humfrey Gilbert as well as the native Americans, Manteo and Powhatan, the father of Pocahontas. Giles Milton (b.1966) is a narrative historian, whose earlier works covered the sixteenth and centuries, including the best selling Nathaniel's Nutmeg (1999), and later moved on to events of twentieth century history, including the Second World War.
