Millais (1829-96) is best known as a Pre-Raphaelite painter, but was also an accomplished and prolific illustrator of books and periodicals. This book is the first to present faithful reproductions of all his published illustrations with each image discussed here in its literary context. The original designs were chiefly wood engravings but also included steel engravings and etchings. The author was a curator in the Department of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum for over twenty years.
