Henry Sullivan (b. Lowell, MA, c.1893), a Marathon swimmer, was the third person, and the first from the US, to swim the English Channel. It was his seventh attempt and he accomplished it on 5-6 August from Dover to Calais in 26 hour 50 minutes, one of the slowest crossings recorded until very recent times. As Sullivan was carried along by adverse tides, it was estimated that he actually swam fifty six miles.
