Notes

A superb Victorian watercolour of the town of Dover from below the castle looking to sea, and showing the edge of the Western Heights with the harbour in the distance. Unfinished figures sitting in the foreground give the painting a rather timeless quality - one has the feeling these people were there but are now just ghosts. The buildings are carefully observed in the pencil work underneath the watercolour which has been added in a impressionistic manner. Perhaps a preliminary sketch for a more elaborate work, our unknown artist is unlikely to have been an amateur, the work is too confident.
