FIRST EDITION. 4to. 11 x 7.5 inches. [8] pp. letterpress + plates. Title in red and black. Bound in contemporary half red morocco, gilt; spine in compartments with raised bands, decorated gilt. Marbled endpapers. A little wear to extremities, flyleaves foxed and occasional scattered foxing elsewhere, including a few plate margins; otherwise a very good copy. Ownership stamp on second free endpaper and early signature on half title. Illustrated by 48 plates in chromolithograph and black and white, the latter with tissue guards. Decorated by title page vignette of arms of Archbishop Parker, and by initial. The book consists of forty eight examples of early alphabets and numerals, etc., preceded by a brief introduction. Henry Shaw (1800-73) was an antiquary, architectural draughtsman, engraver and illuminator who wrote on ornaments, decorative arts and illumination. An imprint of William Pickering, printed at the Chiswick Press. A scarce title. (William Pickering Publisher, p.89).
