4to. 9.75 x 8 inches. viii + 232 pp. In blue cloth spine over pictorial boards. A fine copy. Illustrated throughout in black and white, including title page, and in colour. pictorial endpapers. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. An historical account of Signature Magazine, a quarterly journal of typography and the graphic arts, which also reproduced the work of contemporary artists of the Neo-Romantic School associated with imaginative and abstract landscape artists like Paul Nash, John Piper, Graham Sutherland and Edward Bawden. Signature was published in two series, 1935-40 and 1946-54 and was published and edited by Oliver Simon (1895-1956), a director of the Curwen Press. Based at Plaistow, Newham, East London, the Press was originally founded in 1863, but enjoyed its greatest cultural impact during the inter-war years (it finally closed as a press in 1984).
