8vo. 6.75 x 5.25. xxxvii + [iii] + 282 pp. + [10] pp. publisher's advertisements. Bound in original green cloth, gilt, decorated gilt. Rough cut edges. A little wear to extremities and darkening of spine; otherwise a very good copy. Scott Library slip tipped on to first free endpaper. The famous work by Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797) is an early assertion of women's rights, particularly to education, and was inspired by her visit to France during the Revolution. First published in 1792, it followed her 1790 political pamphlet, A Vindication of the Rights of Man, in a Letter to Edmund Burke. Introduction by Elizabeth Robins Pennell (1855-1936), US writer based in Britain, pioneer cycle tourist, art and food critic, and the author of the first published Mary Wollstonecraft biography in 1884. A very scarce title in this edition.
