FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 7.5 x 5.25 inches. x + 147 pp. Bound in original dark blue cloth, gilt. Patterned endpapers. A little wear to extremities, including head and tail of spine and occasional scattered foxing; otherwise a very good copy. Armourial bookplate and ownership label of W. Heaton Jacob, F.S.A, 29, Sinclair Gardens, Kensington, W. Decorated by half title and head and tailpiece vignettes. A collection of poems relating to early church establishment in the South Island of New Zealand. Following the title poem are sections on Sonnets of the Old Pilgrim Days of the Canterbury Settlement and Contributions towards a New Zealand Christian Year. The last two sections principally feature theological verse. Henry Jacobs (1824-1901) was educated at Charterhouse School and Queen's College, Oxford and ordained priest in 1848. He sailed for New Zealand in 1851 and was a prominent figure in the church and educational establishments of Christchurch, as a College Divinity Professor and school headmaster. He was appointed the first Dean of Christchurch in 1866. A scarce original edition.
