Folio. 8.5 x 12.75 inches. [xx] + 179 + [1]. Signatures: [2], x to xxxx2, a2 to x2, aa2 to yy2 end. Text in Latin. Decorated with title page, head and tailpiece and headline vignettes. A history of the Abbey of Niederaltaich on the Danube in Bavaria, largely through accounts of the lives of its abbots. The Abbey was founded 731/741 and included among its famous heads Abbot Godehard of Hildesheim (996-1022) (St Gotthard), Hermann of Altach (120/01-75), historian and Abbot, 1242-1273, and Joscio Hamberger, Abbot, 1700-39, and creator of the baroque abbey. The book is dedicated to Leopold Ernst, count of Firmin (1708-83), Prince Bishop of Passau, 1763-83 and Cardinal, 1772., who established the Institute of Theology there. The see of Passau had been founded by St Boniface in 737 and like the Abbey of Niederaltaich was secularised in 1803. Passau was later restablished as a purely Bavarian see (it had formerly extended into Austria) and Niederaltaich as a monastery in the twentieth century. Scarce work on church history in central Europe.
