8vo. 8.5 x 5.25 inches. vi + [ii] + 311 pp. + [1] pp. publisher's advertisements. Bound in contemporary mottled calf, spine in compartments with gilt bands decorated gilt and contrasting red title label, gilt. Marbled endpapers. Extremities worn, including corners and head and tail of spine. Occasional scattered foxing, but otherwise a very good copy. Signature on first free endpaper and another one recording purchase near Ambleside 1843. Illustrated by frontispiece folding map hand coloured in outline and by 2 engraved plates. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. A systematic visitor's guide to the Lake District tourist sites. At the end are 120 pages of eleven addenda articles, poems and descriptive extracts on scenery and sites, and Specimens of the Cumberland Dialect, etc. First published in 1778 and attributed to Thomas West, author of The Antiquities of Furness (1774) on the title page and in the Preface to the second edition (reprinted here) by William Cockin (1736-1801), schoolmaster and author, who revised the work after West's death in 1779. This is confirmed in the Advertisement to this edition by the publisher, William Pennington of Kendal
