FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 8 x 5.5 inches. 173 + [1] pp. Bound in original grey cloth, gilt, in price clipped pictorial dust wrapper, which has stains on rear wrapper and edge wear, including chips at head and tail of spine. A little damp staining and creasing, but otherwise a good copy. 1966 inscription on first free endpaper. Illustrated by map and 12 pages of black and white plates. History and guide to the Tuscan island of Elba, briefly ruled by the deposed Emperor Napoleon, 1814-15, from his palace at Portoferraio, the island capital. Vernon Bartlett (1894-1983), journalist and travel writer, was MP for Bridgewater, 1938-50. Two further editions of this title were published.
