Synopsis

Verse von johannes trojan

Item Description

Folio 12.5 x 9 inches. ii + [26] + 1pp. Each page illustrated with a hand-coloured decorated initial letter in the impenetrable stylised German Gothic script. Each letter has a sheet of tissue paper with a verse printed on it. The book is limited to 430 copies of which this is Number 153.

Notes

Quite extraordinary ABC in that practically every letter manages to be distorted to such a degree that without reference to the verse opposite, or the drawing around the letter, would be utterly unrecognisable to a modern eye. The calligraphic exaggeration of the Gothic form is taken to an extreme level. It is easy to see why Germany moved away from Gothic type script in the first half of the 20th Century.
