Notes

The edited correspondence of Grizel, Countess Stanhope, resident in Geneva, 1764-74 and her estate steward, John Brampton. The Chevening estate of about 3000 acres included farms in the parishes of Brasted, Sundridge and Chevening, three mills, woodland and many scattered cottages. The letters are a good source for the the everyday occurrences of eighteenth estate management, including hedging and timber work, farming and gardening, fish and gamekeeping as well as domestic concerns.
