William Roberts An English Cubist.
4to. 9 x 10.75 inches. 152 pp. Bound in original black cloth, gilt, in pictorial dust wrapper. A fine copy. Illustrated by 100 figures in colour and black and white, including portrait frontispiece. William Roberts (1895-1980) was a key player in the early development of Cubism in England and the longest surviving member of the Vorticist movement. He was the only English artist of his generation who succeeded in manufacturing a mature style preserving something of the aesthetic of Cubism. In his long career he used this style to describe a vast array of mostly metropolitan subject matter and in doing so constructed an unparalleled panorama of modern life in England. He served as a war artist in both World Wars and was also a significant portrait painter.
