Isabella Tree (b.1964), author and travel journalist, and her husband, Charles Burrell, decided in 2000, to abandon the farming of the heavy clay soils of the 3,500 acre Knepp Castle Estate in West Sussex and return it to nature. The book describes their livestock management of the wood pasture and the return of rare butterfly species, turtle doves, nightingales and beavers.
