Notes

The first novel of J. P. Donleavy (1926-2017), Irish/ American author, was The Ginger man (1955) which was banned in Ireland and the US. This work presents the stage play of The Ginger Man, first performed in London in September 1959 with What they did in Dublin serving as an introduction. It relates the circumstances of its controversial first night in Ireland at the Gaiety Theatre, Dublin, in October 1959, which led to its being taken off after three performances.
