Some text in double columns. Text in Italian. Bound in original vellum, with contrasting morocco title labels, gilt, with gilt borders. Extremities show signs of a little age wear, previous owner's bookplate neatly removed from first volume, a couple of small margin tears, a few pages browned and occasional small stains and foxing; otherwise a very good crisp copy. Illustrated by three frontispieces, 157 portraits, 2 folding plates, all engraved, by title and dedication page, head and tailpiece vignettes and by initials. Handsome vellum bound copy of the first Bottari edition of Vasari's work describing the lives of the most eminent painters, sculptors and architects of his time, in whose company he could count himself, first published in 1550. The portraits, many by engraver Francesco Bartolozzi (1727-1815), who worked in England after 1764, are based on the wood engravings of the definitive edition of 1568. This 1759-60 edition was edited by Giovanni Gaetano Bottari (1689-1775), Vatican librarian, with extensive notes.
