Notes
The great antislavery novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-96), was first published in the US in 1852 and immediately there was a scramble among English publishers to issue it at home. This plain unadorned and un-illustrated Routledge edition is an early example from that year. It lacks many of the extra features which soon appeared, plates, vignette title, introduction, etc.
