An account of the life and work of the self-taught marine artist, Thomas Summerscales (1842-1927). Naval service took him to Chile and he settled in Valparaiso until he returned to England in 1894 to exhibit his work at the Royal Academy, still continuing to go back to Chile several times. Many of the paintings illustrate Chilean subjects, including naval battles.
