8vo. 6.25 x 9.5 inches. Vol. I, xii + 203 pp.; Vol. II, [iv] + 96 pp. + [ii] + 153 + [1] pp. The Analysis of Beauty has separate half title. Bound in nineteenth century half morocco over marbled boards; spine in compartments with raised bands with contrasting green morocco title labels, gilt. All edges gilt. Some foxing, including fly leaves and plate margins, but otherwise a very good copy. Armourial bookplates. Illustrated by 90 engraved plates, including 2 engraved titles, Vol. II, with vignette. The numbering of and positioning of plates is irregular but all are present. This analysis of Hogarth's work with a life of the artist, is by Thomas Clerk, who also engraved many of the plates. These include the longer series such as Industry and Idleness, The Harlots's Progress, The Rake's Progress, Marriage a la Mode, The Four Times of Day, The Four Stages of Cruelty, and Four Prints of an Election as well as shorter sequences and individual prints, including one never before engraved.
