Bound in contemporary diced calf, gilt, boards with decorated birders; spine in compartments with raised bands, decorated gilt. Inner dentelles. All edges marbled. A little wear to extremities and edges sunned; otherwise a very good clean set. Armourial bookplates of John Goldsmid. Illustrated by engraved portrait frontispiece, with tissue guard (Vol. I). Handsome edition of the works of Ben Jonson, poet and dramatist (1573-1637). Other than the plays the set includes the editor's extensive memoir, commendatory verses in Jonson's praise, epigrams, poems, miscellaneous writings, The English Grammar and verses in Jonson's memory. Edited by William Gifford (1756-1826), poet, editor, critic and satirist, who rose from humble origins to graduate at Exeter College, Oxford, 1782. The set was owned by Major-General Sir Frederic John Goldsmid (1818-1908), military officer and colonial administrator and a member of the Anglo-Jewish banking family.
