Rebacked in later calf preserving original boards with gilt borders: spines in compartments with raised bands, decorated gilt. Marbled endpapers. All edges marbled. A little wear to extremities but otherwise a very good clean set. Illustrated by 24 engraved plates in volumes I-VI, including 2 frontispieces. Decorated by tailpiece vignettes. An early ten volume edition of Pope's works, with three volumes of his letters, beautifully illustrated by twenty four engraved plates. The first edition of The Works first appeared in 1751. It was edited by William Warburton (1698-1779), Bishop of Gloucester and friend and literary executor of Pope. (ESTC T5438).
