FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 4.5 x 6.75 inches. + xvi + [ii] + 436 pp. Bound in original green half morocco over green boards. All edges red. A little wear to extremities, darkening of top edge and some foxing of fly leaves and the adjoining pages; otherwise a very good copy. Early address on first free endpaper and signature on half title. Edward George Earle Lytton Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton (1803-73), was an English politician, MP and writer, who also published several volumes of poetry, in addition to his best-selling novels. Although second only to Dickens in popularity in his time, Lytton's extravagant style and moralising led to his later loss of favour as a novel writer.
