Notes

A very detailed and copiously illustrated account of the Swedish Vega expedition to explore the Northeast Passage, setting out from Karlskrona in 1878 and sailing around the entire coast of Arctic Russia and Siberia to the Bering Strait, then circumnavigating Eurasia and returning to Stockholm in 1880. It relates the history of previous voyages of exploration and describes the life of the local peoples encountered and their tools and equipment. The final chapters relate the expedition's visits to countries visited on their return voyage, including Japan and Ceylon. Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld (1832-1901), scientist and Arctic explorer, was born in Helsinki but forced to leave Finland for political reasons and settled in Sweden after 1857. His interest in early cartography is reflected in the fine set of lithographed maps included in these two volumes, which are a popular condensation of his original five volume report of the expedition published in Swedish.
