FIRST EDITION THUS. 8vo. xvii + 242 pp. + [1] pp. Bound in full vellum, spine and front board blocked in elaborate gilt design by Brock. Top edge gilt, others deckled. Fly leaves browned, but otherwise a very good copy. Pictorial bookplate. Illustrated by 25 colour plates by C. E. Brock, including frontispiece and title page. Decorative endpapers. Decorated by ornamental chapter headings. Fine edition of The Vicar of Wakefield, first published 1766, by Oliver Goldsmith (1728-74) published as one of Dent's 'Series of English Idylls' Very attractively designed and produced, this deluxe edition with the publisher's binding on to full vellum is particularly fine. Charles Edmund Brock (1870-1938) was a painter, line artist and a leading book illustrator of his day, carrying out his historical research in the Cambridge College libraries. He was also known for his golf paintings and his work appeared in Punch, 1901-10.
