Small 8vo. 7.5 x 5.5 inches, [2] + xxiv + [ii] + 305 + [1] pp. Bound in half Bound in half crushed Morocco, gilt, over marbled boards, spine decorated with gilt tooling in a plant motif, and lettering in the arts and crafts style, by Truslove and Hanson (binder's label). Top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. Some scattered foxing throughout, but otherwise a very good copy. 1896 gift inscription on second free endpaper. Illustrated by frontispiece and text figures in pen and ink. Decorated by vignettes, including head and end of chapter, by initials, by publisher's device on verso of half title and by colophon. Handsomely bound and illustrated edition of the novel of the ups and downs of clerical life by Oliver Goldsmith (c.1730-74). It was edited by Henry Austin Dobson (1840-1921), engineer, poet and essayist and illustrated by the Irish born artist, Hugh Thomson (1860-1920) whose pen and ink drawings appeared in some sixty five books. First published in 1890, this is the second reprint of the second edition of 1891.
