Notes
The 'Journal of an eighteenth-century family.' Extracts from the 'Family Book' of Hester Thrale, close female friend of Samuel Johnson, who encouraged her to keep it. She married Henry Thrale MP, a prosperous, cultivated London brewer and became one of England's most hospitable and brilliant hostesses. Johnson lived much of the year at Streatham Park, their country house, visited by Joshua Reynolds, Oliver Goldsmith, Charles Burney and his daughter, Fanny. The account continues with Hester Thrales's remarriage and the story of her daughters and their children. Reprint of the first edition of 1977.
