FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM. 8vo. 8.5 x 5.5 inches. xi + [i] + 512 pp. Bound in contemporary half green morocco over marbled boards; spine in compartments with raised bands, elaborately decorated gilt with contrasting maroon morocco title label, gilt. Extremities a little worn and rubbed and foxing of plates, largely confined to margins; otherwise a very good copy. Small bookplate with heraldic crest on verso of first free endpaper. Illustrated by portrait frontispiece and by 32 engraved plates by Leech. Decorated by opening vignette initial. Book edition bound up from sixteen weekly parts issued 1846-47. A humorous Dickensian story by Albert Smith (1816-60), journalist, Punch contributor and theatrical performer. Illustrated by the caricaturist, John Leech (1817-64), a well known contributor to Punch himself.
